After reading Grant's post on the Players Aid Blog: https://theplayersaid.com/2024/04/05/the-love-hate-relationship-counter-clipping/ I started to think about why I clip counters and how I clip them. Yes, it is a slow day here in NW Arkansas. First of all, I do clip counters, but I usually wait until I am getting ready to play the game. I clip while I am watching YouTube or Sports or chilling with my wife. She thinks I am a nut, by the way for clipping counters, but like I tell her, If You Know You Know.. haha!
, I will break out my handy dandy tool for clipping and go to town. Now I use good old-fashioned Nail Clippers, I did splurge on the fancy kind a few years back and they work great. They also never break and the cost compared to the ROI is very positive. https://amzn.to/43LZAmk
Some folks do not like to use nail clippers as they do not round the corners as perfectly as the other tools that will be mentioned in this post. I have found in my clipping experience, that once you get used to doing it, the counters look pretty darn good. Yes, there are times, when I take too big of a bite out of a counter, but it has never been so devastating that I could not use that counter. Splurge on the bigger clippers as they will not cramp your hand as much. Trust me on this one.
Now you can jump into the counter clipping pool with some tools, made for this task, however the cost goes up very quickly. Heck, they cost as much as a new game. Let me see... a new game or a contraption that clips counters??... no contest in my mind. They do look cool, but I have heard they tend to break down. Something about a spring getting loose or failing.. As I said, I have never used one of them, so I am reporting what others have thrown out. Here is the link for these. At this time they are on Amazon for $44.95 - https://amzn.to/3VHfQTL
Then you can get the granddaddy, the Cadilac of counter clipping for only $69.95.. yikes! I have games that did not cost that much. They look heavy duty and maybe they will last a long time. I do not not know. You can find them here - https://amzn.to/49obZ11
To wrap this up I have a couple of questions. 1- Do you clip counters? If yes, why do you clip counters? #2- What is your tool of choice? Are you a basic nail Clipper kind of dude, or are you a boujee clipper, taking advantage of the more lavish tools available? I like the way clipped counters look and that is one reason I clip,
I do however love the new trend of publishers putting out counter sheets with pre-rounded corners. I hope this catches on with all game publishers.
Well that is about it, I am off to play a Friday morning game of Advanced Squad Leader Starter Kit on VASL (no clipping needed.. haha!) Have a great eclipse weekend everyone. Remember to have fun, Be safe, and Be Kind
Make sure to go check out the Players Aid blog. Grant wrote a much better post about counter-clipping than I did. https://theplayersaid.com/2024/04/05/the-love-hate-relationship-counter-clipping/
