How a little lumber, a sheet of plexiglass, and some creative problem-solving saved my wargames from Bandit’s curious paws.

As many of you know, we share our home with two cats. One of them couldn’t care less about the games on my table. Bandit, on the other hand, is a curious explorer, and my gaming table is one of his favorite destinations.

Unfortunately, Bandit doesn’t just observe the battlefield from a safe distance. Given the opportunity, he’ll happily play Godzilla, stomping through carefully arranged counters, terrain, and battle lines. Clearly, I needed to design a way to protect my games whenever I stepped away from the table..

I headed to the hardware store and picked up two lumber strips measuring 1″ x ½”. I figured they would be sturdy enough to support a ¼”-thick, 2′ x 4′ sheet of plexiglass. To secure everything, I used six screws—three along each side, with washers to help distribute the pressure.

Before installing the screws, I predrilled each hole to reduce the risk of cracking the plexiglass. That worked five times out of six…which means this project wasn’t entirely Bandit-proof or Jerry-proof!
